Mass Effect 2

So I opted for Mass Effect 2 instead of Aion.  So far it's exactly like Mass Effect 1.  Even the classes are the same.  They modified the talents & skills for the class some though.  The graphics look pretty good and everything is fairly responsive.  I'm still not a huge fan of "over the shoulder" camera angles, but it works well in Mass Effect.

The story is interesting so far.  I totally don't trust my "boss", but I just started.  Barely made it out of the into mission.

Bioware doesn't make bad games so I'm sure it will be worth the $50 I paid for it.  And I'm sure there will be tons of downloadable crap coming.  Since I registered Dragon Age I got cool "Dragon Blood Armor" in Mass Effect 2.

Re: Mass Effect 2

I never played the first one. Is it basically an FPS with a storyline and some RPG-like character progression?

Re: Mass Effect 2

The pausing feature kinda breaks it away from FPS to more tactical RPG that happens to allow aiming to matter if you play it by shooting.  But since shooting is only one option you can play it like a straight up RPG too.  Er, as straight as Bioware makes.  ^_^  Can't recommend it highly enough.

Hmm, so it's like Fallout3 with a better storyline?

Re: Mass Effect 2

There are similarities but if you've played the first mass effect you'd recall some differences, my biggest complaint was weapon overheats, I used primarily a sniper rifle and those over heat in about 2 shots, hair ripping outedly annoying during big battles.

Re: Mass Effect 2

I had two sniper rifle configurations, one with +as much damage and as much heat as I could, one shot would over heat, but that one shot would be fatal to what it hit and I'd switch to assault rifle for the rest, or a frictionless materials X rifle with tungsten/shredder rounds that didn't have a rate of fire fast enough to ever overheat.  Hurray for Specter X weapons.

But as to the Fallout 3 question, yes, it's like Fallout 3 with a Star Wars plot and party interactions/romance.

Re: Mass Effect 2

Its Bioware so its 100% voice-overs, decent acting, and a plot with thought behind it.  Molly is out of town until tomorrow afternoon, hoping to get some crazy game time in so I'll post more Sunday.

Re: Mass Effect 2

Anyone wanna borrow my Mass Effect 2?  It's the PC version.  I promise not to sell it to Game Stop this time smile

I've moved on to FF and soon GoW3.

Re: Mass Effect 2

It's just kinda slow in parts.  I'd say you are doing RP stuff as bout as much as you are killin stuff.  I don't mind some RP.. but 50/50 seems a bit excessive.

Welcome to it if you want it.  If we get this Wednesday night thing going on you can just pick it up, or I can leave it with Colin if you'll see him before then.

I'm a bioware fanboy now too, this just wasn't my cup of tea.  Not sure if you can burn a copy or not.. it may require an internet connection to play.  You're welcome to try, or Matt can toss it over to you when he's done.

Re: Mass Effect 2

If anyone wants my copy of Mass Effect 2 for the PC I'll sell it on the cheap (like 10 bucks; if you make a high Diplomacy roll I may just give it to you).  I've never played a Bioware game I didn't like until Mass Effect 2.  It's like they expanded on everything that was wrong with Mass Effect 1.  Mainly character customization is crap now and it just is kind of boring like Derek said.  Quite a shame considering how good the first one was.

Re: Mass Effect 2

Wow.  I had a blast playing it.  Every achievement later I still love slamming adrenaline rush on, popping out of cover, and blowing right through some merc's shields and seeing his brain matter explode out the back of his helm.

Curving a lift around cover to levitate someone than slamming them with a concussive shot or heavy throw to send the roaring off the map is also a lot of fun.

While I didn't like being able to continually have the most powerful weapons and armor from the beginning of the game, there's something to be said for a little variety, and not having to manage my inventory every 10 minutes with 450 suits of phoenix armor, 150 avenger VII rifles, and 3000 incendiary rounds mods was a good trade off for that.

But why do I have to reload?  Tell me why?  Heat never dissipates?  Ever?

And I totally downloaded gibbed's save game editor after the first play through so I'd never have to scan a planet/mine again.

But the story, character interactions, and especially interruptions were awesome.  Ah well, everyone has their own tastes, this being not your cup of tea is a shame but there was enough to the game that it understandably could throw people off.  At least there weren't 400 planets per play through to try and drive the Mako up a mountain over and over again on.  And getting flat XP at the end of the mission meant not having to exit the Firewalker to kill things on foot for the bonus XP and one more shot at finding that last suit of Colossus X Light armor for Tali.

Re: Mass Effect 2

I dunno, I loved the first one, but I just couldn't get into the second one.  Maybe I didn't get far enough into it to appreciate it, or maybe my expectations for it were too high.  I had also just finished playing Dragon Age (best game ever) when I started, so maybe that had something to do with it...

Right now I'm playing Napoleon: Total War, which should keep me busy for quite awhile though.

Re: Mass Effect 2

Derek, if you haven't played GoW1 and GoW2, they have an updated (close to HD) version of them that is well worth playing IMO (just finished them last week).
